Elderly Care in Squirrel Hill PA

It is no secret that exercise is important as a way to maintain one’s weight, prevent future health problems, and boost energy levels. And if one age group could especially benefit from exercise, it is the senior population. One particular exercise that could keep your aging parent health is strength training.Elderly-Care-in-Squirrel-Hill-PA
With the approval of the senior’s doctor and assistance from a professional elderly care provider, here are some of the benefits to strength training on a daily basis.

  • Reduces risk of fall-related injuries. One of the most common reasons older adults end up in the emergency room is because of falling. Strength training can greatly reduce this risk by improving the senior’s flexibility and strength.
  • Prevents osteoporosis. Resistance and weight bearing exercises can help increase bone mass and density. This will help strengthen the bones and make them less likely to break due to osteoporosis.
  • Builds muscle mass. Approximately five to seven pounds of muscle is lost every decade after the age of 20. Strength training will build muscle and prevent muscle loss from happening.
  • Shed unwanted weight. Since the metabolism of older adults slows down to a snail’s speed as they continue getting older, losing the added pounds can be a challenging feat to accomplish. One study found that adults who participated in strength training activities for three months had lost four pounds.
  • Lowers blood pressure. If high blood pressure is an issue for your loved one, this type of exercise may be the answer to your prayers.
  • Reduces rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis pain. Many older adults with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis refuse to do physical activities because they are worried it will make their pain worse. This could not be further from the truth since strength training can actually reduce these painful feelings.
  • Lowers symptoms of chronic conditions. If your loved one is suffering from type 2 diabetes, depression, heart disease, sleep disorders, or other chronic health problems, this type of exercise can help the elder manage their condition by reducing their symptoms.
  • Boosts their mood. Serotonin is a hormone that is released during exercise that provides the exercise with a feel good feeling.
  • Improves their appearance. The elder will look and feel healthier, resulting in more self-esteem and self-confidence.

Strength training does not have to be an intense workout to be effective. Encourage your elderly parent to pick up some light hand weights in order to reap the benefits of strength training.
